Spiral Model

  • This model is produced by Boem.
  • This combines the best features of classic life cycle and prototyping.
  • The activities in this model organized like a spiral that has many cycles.
  • The radial dimension represents the cumulative cost incurred in accomplishing the steps done so far and angular dimension represents the progress made in completing each cycle of the spiral.

Four Major activities in Spiral Model...

Each cycle of the spiral model contains four major activities represented by quadrants.

  • Planning-Determination of objectives, alternatives and constraints.
  • Risk analysis- Analysis of alternatives and identification/ resolving risks.
  • Engineering-Development of the next level product.
  • Customer evaluation-assessment of the result of re-engineering.

It uses prototyping as a risk reduction mechanism and also maintains the systematic approach suggested by classic life cycle.
It can be used for any type of projects.

Merits of Spiral Model

  • It provides the potential for rapid development of incremental version of Software.
  • In this s/w is developed in a series of incremental release.
  • It is divided in to number of framework activities. [ Three to Six] (Customer Communication, Construction and release)
  • This model can be adapted to apply throughout the life of the Software.
  • This model is a realistic approach to the development of large-scale system and software.
  • This model uses prototyping as a risk reduction mechanism.
